Environmental Health and Safety

Mission Statement

Contribute to the Academy’s overall mission of graduating educated men and women to serve the maritime, engineering, environmental, and industrial interests of the Commonwealth and the Nation. The Environmental, Health & Safety Office seeks to enhance the Academy through cost-effective and compliant integration of EHS programs into all activities. The EHS staff will be leaders in promoting a safe learning, working and living environment for students, faculty and staff. 

The mission is accomplished by being proactive in identifying risks and emerging issues and by developing and implementing innovative, practical, and sustainable processes including training, awareness, expert advice, and emergency response.

EHS Policy

Our goal is to be a responsible institution of higher education in protecting the environment. We are committed to complying with accepted environmental practices, including the commitment to meet or exceed applicable legal and other regulatory requirements, to strive for continual improvement in our environmental management system, and to minimize the creation of wastes and pollution. We will, therefore, manage our teaching and other activities in order to reduce the environmental impacts associated with our work.

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) manages and implements a comprehensive set of programs for all faculty, staff and students at MMA. The goal of EHS is to provide consultation to departments so that a safe and healthful working environment is maintained. MMA provides information, with an open door policy, to all staff, faculty, and cadets and works with the community to provide a healthy and safe place to work and visit.
